E Engineering Dept. By car to 19 Thornton Rd: ------------------------- Coming from East on A45, exit B1049 and loop round Histon Road. Coming from London on M11, take A1303, and Storey's Way. Coming from North on A14, *ideal*! -- just turn left on Girton Rd. Coming from West on A45, take turning to Cambridge to get on Madingley Rd then Storey's Way. Once on Girton Road, take the second right (Thornton Road) and my house is 10th on the left, with an `ecological' garden out front. Directions to Jesus Green by car from North - for Ultimate players ------------------------------------------------------------------ Coming down the A14 the M11 peels off to the right. Stick in the left lane. Then the A45 (now A14) peels off to the left. Stick right, going to Cambridge. You fly over the A45 (now A14), and pass Girton College on your left. About one mile later you come to the first traffic lights. Turn left. Immediately another set of traffic lights. Go straight ahead. You are on Victoria Road. Go all the way to the end, where you enter a one way system. Go almost all the way round it, ignoring the first left turning to Milton, the next left turning to Chesterton, the next left turning to (?) Grafton Centre, and taking the left/straightahead when the "Staples" shop comes alongside on your right. SLOW DOWN! You are now on Chesterton Road and will find yourself alongside the river (the river should be on your left). Look for somewhere to park either on this road or on one of the side roads to the right. There is a footbridge over the river. Cross it and look for frisbees. We play about 200 yards from the footbridge. ** NB ** Be very careful to obey parking regulations. Cars are towed in Cambridge without mercy. On Sunday the regulations are pretty reasonable. If you get lost, ask for Jesus Green. Do not attempt to get there through the centre of Cambridge. The central streets are one way or pedestrianized or both. It may also be possible to park on the road in between Jesus Green and Midsummer Common. To get there, take the Grafton Centre turning from the one-way system above, cross over the river and look for parking, probably on the other side of the road. Get to the other side by going round the next roundabout if you want. Directions to Kelsey Kerridge sports hall from the Railway Station ------------------------------------------------------------------ Don't take the above map too seriously. The following route uses streets not shown on it. Come out of the front of the station and go down the road about 50 yards to Tennison Road on the right. Walk along Tennison Road to Mill Road and turn left. Keep going until you come to a major junction and see a large green space ahead on the left. The green space is Parkers Piece. Turn left at this junction. Don't cross onto Parker's Piece, unless you want to throw a disc around there. Proceed 50 yards, and you will find Kelsey Kerridge on your left. It is an ugly building with a car park built around and underneath it. Go in the doors and up the stairs, two flights, and we play in the main hall. Netherhall Upper School Sports Hall ----------------------------------- To city centre ^ | |Hills Rd | / | / ----------+-----O-------------+----- > To Cherry Hinton Long Rd | Queen Edith's Way | | / Netherhall Upper | / School and Sports Hall Addenbrooks Hospital From Luton airport ------------------ From Luton airport, there are 3 ways to get to Cambridge. 1) take the coach. There should be a coach every hour (or maybe two hours?) and it takes you to Cambridge bus station in the centre of town. This is quite a long journey (90 minutes) and the long wait for a coach makes it a suboptimal solution. 2) There is a nearby train station (Luton) which has connections to london. This is a very poor option, as london is the wrong direction. (unless you have something to do in london!) 3) you could take a taxi to a station on the cambridge railway line, for example Hitchin (about 10KM away) and take train from there. There are about 2 trains per hour from Hitchin to cambridge. or you could get a taxi all the way from luton. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=542775&y=261093&z=1&sv=542775,261093&st=OSGrid&lu=N&tl=~&ar=y&bi=~&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf Thornton Road is close to Girton College. Thornton Road has two ends, either of which gives access. Directions on foot or bike using the South end: Come out of town on Huntingdon Road; just after the turning for Felix hotel is the Thornton Road turning on the right. Proceed down Thornton Road 300 yards, then (just before the shops) turn left from Thornton Road onto Thornton Road. (Yes, I mean it.) (Don't go on down Thornton Way.) (To add to the challenge, the 2nd road sign for Thornton Road is currently BLANK.) Go another 300 yards and 19 is on the right. Directions by bus: From the railway station there are no direct buses to Girton Corner. More than half of the buses at the railway station do go to the city centre. Then from the city centre, stagecoach buses that go near to Girton are: Citi 5 (starts city centre, goes to Bar Hill; get off at Girton Corner) Citi 6 (starts city centre, goes to Girton and Oakington; get off at the stop after Girton Corner, which is the North end of Thornton Road). The 5 and 6 both depart from the south part of the bus station, on the road adjacent to emmanuel college. There are other bus companies too. Any bus going to Huntingdon will go past Girton Corner. I don't think stagecoach sell a through-ticket from railway station to Girton; you can either buy two singles, one on each bus; or a "Megarider" day ticket which gives you unlimited travel all day. From Girton Corner, walk down Girton road, and Thornton Road is 2nd turning on the right. I usually just get a taxi (pounds 9.50).
